Taste of Everest (14 days)

This trek has evolved after parents and friends of Youth to Everest trekkers have asked for it!  The itinerary is similar to the youth trek, and members will be involved in some community work in Khunde at our newly established nursery.

Experience the sights of Kathmandu, the thrill of flying into Lukla at the base of the Khumbu Valley, and visit the Sherpa capital of Namche and the twin villages of Khunde and Khumjung. You reach an altitude of 3,840m, higher than New Zealand’s Mt Cook, and gain a stunning up-valley yiew of the High Himalaya mountains including Everest and Ama Dablam.

Itinerary

Following our arrival in Kathmandu, trekkers fly from Kathmandu to the alpine airport at Lukla at the base of the Khumbu Valley.  Lukla, at an altitude of 2,840m, is a significant village through which many trekkers and mountaineers pass each year.  We are joined by porters who carry our kit-bags for us, enabling us to carry just day packs with our immediate requirements.

Over the next two days we trek to Namche, the capital for the Sherpa people, where we acclimatise over a two night period.

From Namche we complete the short trek to Khunde, our base for the next two nights.  We visit the Hillary memorial and spend time working in our new plant nursery which is managed by local Sherpa.  Once the seedlings are mature (two to three years) they will be planted out by locals during the monsoon season.

Upon departing Khunde we head up valley to Deboche and the very comfortable Rivendell Lodge.  We visit the oldest Monastery in the Khumbu and reach the highest point at Ama Dablam Base Camp at 4,600m.

Next day we descend to Namche where we stop for lunch before rejoining the Dhud Khosi River and arriving at Jorsale for the night. Our final trekking day is a pleasant stroll back to Lukla where we celebrate our trek and farewell our Sherpa friends.

From Lukla to back Kathmandu, and a chance for some reflection and relaxation before we commence our journey home.

This trek is suitable for people with a moderate level of fitness, and those wishing to roll their sleeves up and assist with our ongoing community work.

Download our optional excursion to the Royal Chitwan National Park, a three day add-on to our trip that takes us to just north of the border with India, to a Park that abounds with animal and bird life.
